Book of Q

wood, mirror, 2000

The Book of Q was a wooden box shaped like a book. Inside were wooden blocks, with words written backward. The words were difficult to understand at first sight. They became comprehensible by looking through the mirror on the cover. The viewer also experienced a delay before understanding the words, which has been my experience with English text.

Book of Wax

used book, wax, ink, 2000

I cut a used book in order to transform it into a container. The book was covered with wax and blue ink filled the inside. I printed Wittgenstein¡¯s text about the ambiguity of verbal language backward (right to left in mirror image.) I painted the text with wax so that the text became blurred and hard to read. The text floated on the ink.

Since making this piece, I have continued to use ink as a metaphor for language, source of knowledge and communication by filling, dripping and seeping ink onto a medium.

Book of Maze

used book, mirror, wooden balls, 2000

I chose a used book entitled Model and Structure and cut a rectangle out of the center of the book. I built a maze inside with pieces of mirror. Twelve wooden balls with words on them were inside the maze. Each word is part of the sentence ¡®I-hope-that-you-understand-what-I-try-to-talk-to-you¡¯. It was also written backward.
