Artist statement

Since I came to Unite States in 1999, I have been working with my experience of being "alien.' Language difficulties, ambiguity, anxiety, unfamiliarity and feeling of exile have been both my experience and the subject of my artwork.

Through my work, I have tried to portray the ambiguity I felt in language and to make the viewer experience it. I tried to reveal the feeling of unfamiliarity beneath the familiar world by the experience of defamiliarization. I looked for a way to express my anxiety and to help it evolve into a positive feeling.

I have been playing with two opposite feelings--such as familiar and unfamiliar, comfortable and uncomfortable, secure and exposed, anxious and excited. While expressing those confusions through my works, I have also moved forward to adjust my faltering steps in a new world.

My works are based on my personal experience of being between two worlds; however, the feelings of alienation that I have tried to express could commonly arise in people¡¯s lives--not only from physical transition but also from the sudden discovery of unfamiliarity within a familiar life. I hope to evoke that through my works.
